Impoving Plasma Cutting Quality, Part I
Modern Application News,
September, 2008
Dear Subscriber,
Here is your most recent issue of ArcSmart with the latest valuable welding information
and resources for educators like you.
Miller proudly introduces Moraine Park Technical College, Beaver Dam, Wis.
At Moraine Park Technical College, 28 students are enrolled in a welding program made up of four core welding courses. Students can be part of a Welding Club that creates projects and sells them to raise funds for attending events such as the AWS/Fabtech welding show. Even more important, welding students act as peer mentors to the annual High School Junkyard Challenge, where teams compete on a given theme to create a sculpture in four hours (shown above). Instructor Sue Silverstein believes in showing students their options by getting them more involved.
"Welding is a career where you can find what you like and what you are good at because there is so much variety," says Silverstein. "After 25 years, I am still learning things."
In the welding lab, students practice on a variety of welding equipment, including multiprocess welders and Spectrum plasma cutters.

Like a hot knife through butter, a plasma arc cutting machine slices through any electricity-conducting metal faster than traditional cutting methods, including saws, snips or oxy-acetylene torches. However, because of its newness, many people are not familiar with proper plasma arc cutting safety procedures. Fortunately, basic safety practices are not hard to learn. Learn More »
