Gas forge

by B. Cook

Project Description

Gas forge I built out of some scrap steel my dad had behind his shop. Still a work in progress.

Build Process

Cut a few bits off and welded up some holes. After that, I torched the end off and cut the window. Then layed out the burners and torched the holes out. Welded on the pipes then drilled and tapped for the hardware. I didn't really account for door thickness when I layed out my burners so I may add a burner right after the door or cut the forge shorter between the door and first burner. Any ideas?

Tools Used

Victor torch, Millermatic 250, and a bandsaw

How big around is it & where did you get the burners?

I built the burners. They are 3/4" black pipe and with reducers for the intake bell. They where just cast and looked really bad so I chucked them in the lathe and turned them down to make them look better. The flame holders 1" black pipe forged to a bell.

Bobby, Very nice! What did you use for the burners?

I'll post some more pics of the finished forge soon. It just needs some paint at the moment. Its working beautifly. The only complaint is I have the burner too far back and heats up more metal than necessary and make some work dificult because of this.

Yes I did. Added 2 layers of 1" Koawool and coated with ITC-100. Cut some 2300 degree bricks for the floor. I also made a plug out of the wool and coated it. It slides between the first and second burner so I can run just the front half.

Nice. Did you insulate the interior?
