Article Summary
Metal Cored Wire Increases Productivity 30%
- Metal cored wire permits multiple pass welding without clean up
- Deposition rates potentially doubled
- No slag inclusion, welds meet AWS D1.1 requirements
Customer Testimonial
“The good thing about FabCOR 86R is that we can run one pass and then another pass right over it. We don’t have any type of slag inclusions.”
— Douglas Banks, owner, Banks Welding & Fabrication
Application
Structural and architectural steel welding by a fabricator/contractor
Key Business Issue
How to increase productivity and lower overall welding costs.
Challenge
- Accepting that a higher cost filler metal can dramatically lower overall production cost
- Adapting to the welding characteristics of a new wire type, including the need to reposition the weldment
Previous System & Process
- AWS E71T-8, an all-position self-shielded flux cored wire
New Solution
- FabCOR 86R, an AWS E70C-6M H4 gas-shielded metal cored wire for welding in the flat and horizontal position
Results
- 30% overall productivity increase. FabCOR has a much higher deposition rate, has no slag to chip and creates minimal spatter, all of which increase productivity (even if the weldment does need to be repositioned).
- Multiple pass welds without cleaning. FabCOR does not require cleaning between passes for multiple pass welds, so operators can complete welds on thicker materials much faster.
- Good weld quality. Welds meet AWS D1.1 requirements and have no slag inclusions or sidewall fusion issues.
